How the 2-player, 3-player and 4+ world settings work
When a host starts a session, they pick one of three versions of the world:2 player, 3 player or 4+ player. Some content in the world adjusts to that choice. The developers have not published a full list of exactly which challenges change, so we will not guess at specifics here.
One detail worth knowing: the setting works more like the minimum number of players expected for the session than a hard cap on how many can join. If your group cannot guarantee everyone stays for the whole walk, the official advice is to pick the lower setting.
What is the best number of players?
There is no official best number, and any site claiming "4 is optimal" is stating a preference, not a fact. What the developers have said:
- With 2–3 players, communication stays simple and the game plays as a more focused co-op experience.
- With larger groups, coordination, splitting up and regrouping become a bigger part of the game.
- Close to 12 players, the developers themselves describe the result as "an absolute mess" — in the fun sense.
Can you play Big Walk solo?
Not really. One person can launch the game and walk around for a while, but the main content is built around cooperation, communication and multi-person challenges, so a solo player cannot progress normally. If you mostly play alone, Big Walk is not designed for that — see our review roundup for who the game actually suits.
Is there matchmaking?
No. Big Walk does not automatically group you with strangers. Groups form through the platform friend list or a Join Code from the host. The full joining walkthrough is on the crossplay page.
Player limits and subscriptions by platform
| Platform | Online players | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Steam (Windows/Mac) | 2–12 | Steam account and internet connection |
| Mac App Store | 2–12 | Join via Join Code; no Game Center friend-room list |
| PlayStation 5 | Up to 12 | PS Plus required for online play |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 2–12 | Nintendo Switch Online required |
One thing that confuses people: the Nintendo Store listing shows "Single system (1)" next to "Online (2–12)". That first number is about local players on one console, not a solo mode — the same store page notes the game has no single-player mode.
